The Way of the Water Weird

In an upside-down tower that Draknar had led them to, which in itself was a bit of a head-scratcher, Flynx Fleetfoot made an amusing discovery. In the remains of what used to be a well-stocked library, there lay three ancient books that even raiders couldn’t be bothered to take.

Flynx took one. Flynx read one. Thoroughly.

It revealed that the odd creature he, Aarki, and Draknar had tussled with a few days prior was known as a "Water Weird." The name alone sent Flynx into a fit of giggles. "Those Netherese scholars really knew how to name things," he thought, admiring their sense of humour.

The book described the Water Weird as an elemental guardian bound to a specific water-filled location, like a pool or a fountain. "Maybe it should be called 'Water Attached' or 'Aqua Glued' or something." Flynx chuckled to himself, convinced of his unmatched wit.

Just then, Draknar interrupted his mirth, needing help with a chest. Of course, in this bizarre construct, the chest was tied to the ceiling. So, the adventure continued, and Flynx momentarily pushed thoughts of the Water Weird out of his mind.

After a day filled with exploring the topsy-turvy building and dealing with its less-than-pleasant inhabitants as well as some more welcoming ones, the group decided to settle down for a meal and some well-deserved rest.

As Flynx began his evening ritual of brushing his teeth, combing his ears, and filing his toenails, he suddenly recalled another odd fact about the Water Weird – it didn’t require air, food, drink, or sleep. "No sleep? How does anything function without sleep?" he wondered, yawning.

That night, Flynx's dreams took him back to his home in the Sable Mountains. It was the spring feast, and a young pretty Kobold he'd always fancied handed him a drink – a sweet, fizzy concoction called "Dragon's Fizz." As he looked down to take a sip, the liquid in his cup rippled, and slowly, a fearsome Water Weird rose.

Flynx wasn’t startled and held onto his cup firmly. Partly because the recent adventures having hardened him. Largely because the Water Weird was only a smidge larger than the cup. The creature looked perplexed and indignant. Then, to Flynx's surprise, it spoke. "Flynx Flatfoot," it began in a pitch that was unpleasantly high.

"Eh, actually, it's Fleetfoot, Flynx FLEETfoot,” Flynx corrected.

"Oh, Flynx Fleetfoot then,” the tiny Water Weird continued. "Remember your mission... discover the ancient cities you learned about, for therein lie the clues to finding the shard of the Midnight Gem."

“Ok, and who exactly are you?” Flynx asked.

“Me? You don’t know me? I am Valthrunax the Shadowflame, your dragon lord, appearing in this stupid form since this ridiculous creature is the only thing you seem to be thinking about.”

“Oh, my lord!"

As the cup smashes on the ground, Flynx awoke.

"Well, that's what I call water WEIRD!"
